Q: What's the story behind your business, and how did you get started?
A: We have always been interested in finding ways to be more self-sustaining. For years we've been doing things like gardening, composting, and even keeping chickens. After our first couple of years we noticed that our fruit and vegetable yields were low and quickly realized that it was because of low pollinators. At that time the plague of the honey bee, also known as "Colony Collapse Disorder", was becoming more publicized. After learning about this pandemic, we dedicated our time to learning as much as we could about these amazing creatures. Going from conference to conference, researching, and traveling to apiaries across the U.S., we wanted to learn everything we could about honey bees.
Shortly afterwards, we traded some chickens and received our first colony of bees! It seemed like right after we received our first bees, everyone wanted to know more. People started asking us for updates, following us on social media, and calling/texting. The response was great!
Our vast knowledge in beekeeping soon led us to mentor other beekeepers, teach backyard beekeeping classes, and we were even asked to join the Cincinnati Nature Center! The best part was everyone that we met wanted to do their part in saving the bees, whether that was learning about organic gardening techniques or even keeping their own bees! However, most people were unsure of how to get started. That was when we started our mentoring program called "Host-A-Hive". The program allows people at any level of beekeeping to get involved. We focus our business on educating people about the importance of the honey bee and what they can do to help. Our knowledge is the fuel behind what we do.
